Why Venous Oximetry Matters
Most monitoring technologies focus on oxygen delivery.
However, oxygen delivery alone does not indicate whether the brain is receiving enough blood flow to meet its metabolic requirements.
To understand whether perfusion is truly adequate, clinicians must also understand how much oxygen remains after cerebral extraction.
Venous oximetry provides this missing information.
What is Jugular Venous Oxygen Saturation (SjvO₂)?
SjvO₂ measures the oxygen remaining in blood after it has passed through the brain.
By measuring oxygen remaining after cerebral extraction, SjvO₂ provides a direct assessment of cerebral oxygen utilization and metabolic balance.
Clinical Validation
SjvO₂ measurements were compared against laboratory blood gas analysis.
Results demonstrated excellent agreement with co-oximetry measurements across a broad physiological range.
